Hello lovelies! Today I am talking about ways in which you can make yourself more professional and create a personal brand for yourself that will distinguish you from other job candidates and employees. Just because you are in college doesn’t mean it isn’t important for you to begin creating an online and professional presence for yourself. Here are a few tips on how!

Create a LinkedIn account

If you haven’t already, make sure you have a LinkedIn profile. Employers are increasingly turning to the internet to find new people to hire and to share job opportunities. But just having an account doesn’t work – you need to put in the time and effort to keep it updated, find connections, and reach out to employers as well.

Build a professional website

There are plenty of free website building sites out there that can help you create a professional and beautiful personal website. (I suggest wordpress.com if you want to go free, but if you are willing to pay a little for your own domain, make sure to get the actual WordPress.) Include your resume, links to any personal work you’ve done either in class or during an internship, and contact information. Consider creating a blog that showcases your writing abilities and interests related to your field.

Aesthetics matter

From your resume to your references page to your website, make sure everything looks clean and professional. First impressions are based on what is seen, so having a cluttered, poorly-designed resume won’t be doing you any favors.

Network, network, network

Attend career fairs and events and network with professionals in your field. Gain contact information so that you can use them as contacts later on to get a job post-graduation. Put yourself out there and make sure that people learn your name.

Act professional

When you send out important emails, make sure you use a professional email address (preferably one that is your full name). Be civil and friendly to everyone when you attend career events. Be on time and professional at your current job and internship and work hard so that you can gain skills and experience to showcase on your resume. Don’t be afraid to go above and beyond the expectations and place yourself outside the competition.
