Hello lovelies! Today I am sharing some advice on how to handle college dining services and make sure you have a happy, healthy experience with food in college! Many freshman (and upper classman as well) are signed onto meal plans that require the students to eat at university provided dining halls. Contrary to popular myth, the Freshman 15 (the idea that you will gain 15 pounds your first year of college) doesn’t have to become a reality! Here are 5 tips to help you conquer the college dining hall and eat healthy while in college!

Variation is key

The most important way to stay healthy in college and to eat well is to have a variety in your diet. Universities are generally getting better at providing a wide variety of options in their dining halls, so take advantage of this variety and resist any urge to eat the same food all of the time – especially if your go-to is greasy pizza!

Pay attention to portion sizes

Everything is okay in moderation. Some schools provide an all-you-can-eat meal plan, which may make you feel the need to, well, eat everything. Instead, pay attention to the portion sizes, get yourself one plate of food, and only eat what you actually are hungry for.

Always get fruit + vegetables

Start with getting a serving of fruit + vegetables (and possibly a salad), and then grab a smaller entrée or meal to go with that. Choosing a salad or a bowl of fruit first will mean you can fill up on these items and will be too full to eat larger portion sizes of unhealthy things such as pizza or a hamburger.

Keep your dorm room stocked with healthy snacks

You may find yourself wanting a quick snack during the day as you head between classes. Instead of waiting until lunch or dinner and then going crazy, keep your room stocked up with small healthy snacks you can have during the day.

Bring a Friend

Having a friend with you during your dining hall adventures will definitely reduce the risk of you over-eating. Friends can help keep you in control and push you to choose healthier options. Plus, you have someone to sit with! 🙂

  1. These are such great tips! I personally like to have a lot of healthy snacks in my room and in my backpack, so when I feel like having a break from studying in the library or I get a bit hungry before lunch/dinner, I already have something good to eat, instead of going to a vending machine and being tempted by junk food.
