Hello lovelies! Today I am discussing all of my super-secret tips on how to stay motivated and focused in college! At the start of the semester, it is very important to take initiative and stay organized so that later on, when midterm season hits, you will be better prepared to cope with the stress and pressure! Motivation is an absolute essential quality you need in order to survive college, but it can definitely be a tricky thing to hang onto, especially after a few weeks of classes and a pile of homework! Luckily, there are many things you can do to stay motivated in college and not become part of an endless cycle of procrastination.

Make a plan + prioritize

Know exactly what you need to accomplish and make a plan of how you are going to do so! Outline all of this clearly in a planner, or some other organizational method that works for you. Prioritize assignments based on due dates, and focus on accomplishing one task at a time.

Set attainable goals

One thing I do when I am really struggling to write a paper or finish class readings is to break up the work into chunks which are actually manageable. I will give myself a half an hour to read a certain number of pages, for example, and then take a short break to relax and de-stress. For a 5-6 paper, I will tell myself I have to write one page a day, and this makes it seem not as hard to accomplish! Having attainable goals for all areas of your life – not just academics – will keep you motivated to move forward because nothing you have to do will seem as scary anymore.

Find your support network

In college, friends, family, and other people you can rely on and trust are absolutely crucial for your mental/emotional health. Create a group of people around you who genuinely want you to succeed and motivate and inspire you to do so. Get rid of the friends in your life who take away from your happiness or detract from your life goals. Find a mentor in a professor or counselor for support and guidance on college and life post-graduation. Most importantly, make sure that everyone in your life genuinely adds to your life – and doesn’t take away from it!

Acknowledge your accomplishments

It’s so easy to forget to stop for a moment and reflect on everything you’ve accomplished so far. That ten page paper you were stressing about a few weeks ago – you totally rocked that! The midterm you studied four weeks for – ~killed~ it! Remember to take a step back every once and a while and give yourself a quick reward for hard work done well. You deserve it! Then, move on to whatever comes next on your to-do list.

Remember why you are doing this

Sometimes we all need a break and a reminder of why exactly we are putting ourselves through the insanity that is college. When you want to give up on it all, remember the reasons that pushed you to come to a university in the first place, and hold onto these things as your motivational inspiration moving forward. Everything you’ve accomplished in college so far, and everything you will accomplish, is just one step closer to you reaching your life goals and creating the future you want to experience. Remember that by choosing college, you’ve chosen something real and amazing, and it will all be worth it in the end.
